Sarah's Salt

SCENE XI. I AM SARAH.

(SARAH appears. She holds her belly.)

I am more

I am those things

The chains

The lash

The gag and ball

The hot iron that shapes

I am those things

The apron strings

The call

The response

The wings of angels drowned

Fallen amongst barnacles and clay

I am birthed into newness

Through the belly laughs of barber shops

And barbecues

And hymnals with an ancient call

I am these things and more

I am the fingernail of creation

The source of seduction

The crest of possibility

I am unbroken

Weaving through broken bodies

Unencumbered by time.

My plays are vehicles for human liberation.

SKiNFoLK: An American Show

(AVERY pins up her hair.)

I was

Am?

Was

Am!

Was

Named after my great-grandfather

Avery Clifford Beauxregard

A fighter in the confederate army

And upholder of the peculiar institution

How peculiar! you might think

But nevertheless he fell in love with

And promptly broom jumped with

A freewoman named Sadie

And that made my grandmomma

Who then made my mother and uncles and thangs

That then made me

And here

Here I am

On this stage

And ACB

Would think

I think he would think

He has never seen such a glorious thing

Before in his life.

Structure/Race

JOHN
I’m a white man white men don’t know anything about race.

HAROLD
Isn’t white a race?

JOHN
No white is devoid of race. The definition of white is having no race.

HAROLD
Oh?

JOHN
No culture. We just kind of flap around.

HAROLD
Flap?

JOHN
Yeah, and so–I don’t know if this is the project for me. I don’t know. It seems political. I don’t really do. Political work.

HAROLD
And it’s political because?

JOHN
I’m being asked to. Take a position on–because I have to engage in this hot issue that isn’t really my problem–

EDWARD

We’ll actually—

HAROLD

Right.

JOHN
–Because I don’t have a race. And these things should be dealt with by people who have races.

EDWARD
(wide eyes) Racists?

JOHN
Races. People who have races.
